Chapter 18: Similar Malice 2

“Duck down! Land us at the tower’s base!” Rainier noticed just in time a volley of arrows about to shoot Tero and Nera out of the sky. He also initially intended to land right on top of the tower to face Musala Kasamir, but a barrier made from cosmic magic blocked their path, so they had to reach the tower from the ground level.

Tero and Nera dropped down to the base of the tower where a battle was already underway between equally sized groups of karkans and arachnacosa. When the four of them landed on the ground, they all readied themselves for battle with their weapons of choice.

Chapter 17: Similar Malice 1

“Archers, take up cover positions! Infantry, crowd around the chokepoints with pikes out! Mages! Cast your support magic! Those with fire attributes begin casting flares past the walls!”

Various lesser commanders began ordering the karkan troops into position. A horn from a lookout was blasted thrice before a spear pierced his head from an unknown assailant.

“They are attacking already?! All of you, TO ARMS!” Inside the main portion of the firehouse, Musala Kasamir ordered his karkan subordinate commanders to the outside and lead the troops. “This damn Rainier… I didn’t think he would be this audacious.”

Chapter 16: Preparing for Slaughter

Rainier trained himself on how to use tropospheric magic in three elements. He first learned Shadow Spear of the darkness element, Stone Shot of the earth element, and Death Lance of the death attribute.

Nestor mentioned how skilled Rainier was in not only mastering spells in the two elements he taught Rainier in, but a spell from the death attribute as well. The aged dhampir also stated it was probably due to death being Rainier’s natural attribute.

The spells literally conjured what the names said, although in stone shot’s case it required a reasonably sized stone nearby to manipulate.

Ch. 15: Calm Winds

“Lord! I am most impressed by this achievement. Subjugating the arach leadership could only be done by someone with an indomitable will and fierce nature.” Falth, like usual, offered no expense in his praise towards Rainier.

Rainier wasn’t one to respond well to excess flatter or lack of, but there was some truth to the elder dhampir’s words. Besides, he knew that these dhampirs only responded to cold evidence of a person’s abilities.

Ch. 14: Dominance and Authority 6

“You two, be quiet and follow me. Close in your wings tightly. It’s been a long time since we’ve participated in a stealth operation, so let’s make this quick and dirty.” The dhampir known as Ganel was currently latched on to the side of a cliff where the ancient city of Vectoir.

Vectoir- The first and only major city of note on the Roseir Plateau. What was once a citadel for humans slowly developed over decades into a metropolis for mainly humans with the addition of other major races, most notably the karkans. Vectoir was also the first city to detach itself from the human empire during its collapse, soon falling prey to Ademptis’ corruption. The city finally lost its last little vestige of civilization from aggressive raids by arachs, a new hive of evoants, and a force led by genocidal intent karkans. Recently, Vectoir has taken over by karkans in order to gain more territory.

Ch. 13: Dominance and Authority 05

“And this is Outpost Roseir, my home for right now.”

Rainier gestured towards the entrance to the underground base. Most of his improvised traps from before were already cleaned up and gotten rid of. Rainier was glad he didn’t need to rely on those unpredictable traps anymore.

Along the way home, Rainier had some of the dhampirs collect supplies he needed. Namely blaze crystals along with any other kinds they could find. He also had two of them collect a supply of wretched poisonfingers and their poison. Other than that and some hunting for food, Rainier led Sataska and the rest of the dhampirs back to the outpost.

Ch. 12: Dominance and Authority 4

“Before Ganel comes with this Kosok Kre, let me ask you something, my lord.” Falth stood at the ready next to Rainier with Sataska close by. The twins, Nera and Tero were going through Falth’s command of protecting Rainier and took positions relatively close to him keeping watch with their polearms at the ready. “Do you know about magic?”

On a side note, Nera’s weapon was a glaive with two edges on opposite sides of the pole on both ends of the hafts. Tero’s weapon of choice was had a narrow spear tip at the top with a single but long half-moon edge below it.

Ch. 11: Dominance and Authority 3

Already, twelves coffins had been brought up using several silk ropes Rainier created. He made introductions with the old man, finding out his name to be Falth Ladia. Though Rainier expected it, he was still surprised to see more dhampirs come out alive from the coffins.

“There really is a family of you guys in these coffins.” Rainier scratched his head as another coffin was pulled up by a group of human looking dhampirs.

Like Falth, all of the dhampirs so far had the last name of Ladia and were equally emaciated as he was.

Ch. 10: Dominance and Authority 2

 –

“So… Where are we going?”

Sataska and Rainier were casually pacing themselves towards their destination. Finally when Sataska grew bored of nonstop walking and miserable attempts in flirting, she finally asked where they were going.

So far, Rainier had been quiet about his destination. To be honest, he had only visited this location once and he wasn’t too clear on its whereabouts. All he remembered was that it was on the west end of Roseir Plateau. Basically, on the opposite end of the plateau where Outpost Roseir was at.

Ch. 9: Dominance and Authority 1

Rainier and Sataska held on for dear life to the dead tree. Apparently this tree was a member of that mangrove Spider Web Tree species, so the roots were just thin enough for both of them to wrap their arms around.

They could hear the screams and screeches of arachnacosa and evoant alike as they fell to the center of the oasis trap’s mouth. The only future for those creatures was to be digested and become sustenance for the oasis trap.

It was like seeing a venus flytrap in action now that Rainier thought about it. Those plants too waited for food to crawl into their mouths before clamping down.
